Multiplayer Games: How to Play Online with Friends
Want to play with friends? This guide covers everything about Ward Games multiplayer — from creating rooms to sharing invite links.
Some games are better with friends. Ward Games offers online multiplayer for four of our strategy games — Chess, Checkers, Hex Empire, and Connect Four. This guide covers everything you need to know: creating rooms, inviting friends, playing as guests, and handling disconnections.
Available Multiplayer Games
Each multiplayer game offers a different type of strategic experience:
- Chess — the classic strategy game with full rules including castling, en passant, pawn promotion, and all checkmate/stalemate detection. Compete with friends at any skill level.
- Checkers — forced jumps, multi-jump chains, and king promotion. Simpler than chess but with deep tactical play. Great for quick matches.
- Hex Empire — a hex-grid territory control game with dice combat. Build armies, capture cities, and expand your empire across the map. More complex than the others but incredibly engaging.
- Connect Four — drop discs into a 7×6 grid to connect four in a row. Quick games (usually under 5 minutes) make it perfect for casual competition.
Creating a Game Room
Starting a multiplayer game is straightforward:
- Navigate to any multiplayer game page.
- Click "Play Online" from the game mode menu.
- You'll enter a lobby where you can Create Room. Click that button and a new game room is generated.
- You'll see a room code and a Copy Link button. The link looks like
wardgames.now/games/chess?room=ABC123. - Send this link to your friend via text, email, Discord, or any messaging app.
Once your friend opens the link, they'll automatically join your lobby. When both players are in the lobby, the host can start the game.
Joining a Game
If a friend sends you an invite link, simply click it. You'll be taken directly to the game page and auto-joined into their room. If the link doesn't work for some reason, you can also join manually:
- Go to the game page (e.g., /games/chess).
- Select "Play Online".
- Enter the room code your friend shared and click Join Room.
Guest Play: No Account Needed
One of the best things about Ward Games multiplayer is that it works without accounts. When you enter a multiplayer lobby without being signed in, the system automatically creates a guest identity for you. This guest ID persists in your browser session, so you can navigate away and come back without losing your spot.
Guest players can do everything signed-in players can during a match: make moves, see the game state, and play to completion. The only differences are:
- Guest scores aren't saved to the global leaderboard.
- Guest identities reset when you close the browser entirely.
- Guests appear with a generic name like "Guest" in the lobby.
For a better experience — named identity, leaderboard placement, and persistent game history — create a free account. But for a quick match with a friend, guest play works perfectly.
During the Game
Once the game starts, everything works in real-time through live data synchronization. When you make a move, your opponent sees it instantly (or within a fraction of a second). The game state is stored on our servers, so both players always see the same board.
Some tips for smooth online play:
- Stay on the game page — navigating away doesn't end the game, but it pauses your view. A gold "Active Game" banner will appear at the top of the site reminding you to return.
- Be mindful of turn timing — there's no strict time limit per turn, but don't leave your opponent waiting too long!
- Use the in-game UI — each game shows whose turn it is, the current state, and any relevant information (captured pieces in Chess, jump count in Checkers, territory scores in Hex Empire).
Handling Disconnections
Internet connections can be flaky. Here's what happens if someone disconnects:
- Brief disconnection — the game state is preserved on the server. When the player returns to the game page, they automatically reconnect and see the current board state. No data is lost.
- Longer absence — the room remains active for a while. The remaining player will see a waiting state. If you need to reconnect, simply navigate back to the game page — the URL with the room code will rejoin you.
- Active game banner — if you navigate to another page on Ward Games while you have an active online game, a gold banner appears at the top of the site with a link back to your game. This prevents you from accidentally abandoning a match.
The key thing to remember: your game is stored on the server, not in your browser. Refreshing the page, closing and reopening the tab, or even switching devices (if signed in) will reconnect you to the same game.
Tips for a Better Multiplayer Experience
- Use a stable connection — WiFi or mobile data both work well. Avoid playing during connection transitions (e.g., switching from WiFi to cellular).
- Coordinate beforehand — share the room link before your opponent opens the game page so they join directly into your room.
- Start with Connect Four — if you're testing out online play for the first time, Connect Four games are quick (5-10 minutes) and the rules are simple. Great for verifying everything works before committing to a longer Chess or Hex Empire match.
- Try vs AI first — each multiplayer game also has AI opponents (Easy and Hard difficulty). Practice against the AI to learn the game before challenging a friend.
- Add each other as friends — if both players have accounts, add each other through the Friends page to stay connected for future matches.
Local Multiplayer
Don't have internet? Some games support local multiplayer where two players share the same device, taking turns. Chess, Checkers, Tic Tac Toe, and Connect Four all have "Play vs Friend (Local)" options. Simply select local multiplayer from the game mode menu and pass the device back and forth. It's old school, but sometimes sitting next to someone and competing on the same screen is the most fun way to play.
Ready to play? Pick a game, create a room, and send the link to a friend. The whole process takes about 30 seconds from opening the game to making your first move.
